Sport, Music and Fun:

Capoeira originates from Brazil, and can be described as a sport, a game,  an art and a philosophy. It combines elements of musicality, acrobatics, dance and martial arts. The movements executed in capoeira involve the co-ordinated use of the whole body. Besides being fun and attractive, it is very efficient in child development.

In Brazil, capoeira is the second most practised sport after soccer. It is part of many Brazilian schools’ curricula as it is considered helpful in encouraging children to be good citizens, a positive impact that continues into their adult lives.

Benefits: Children who practise capoeira on a regular basis benefit from improved physical and mental abilities. Capoeira helps develop their balance, coordination, general fitness, flexibility, sense of rhythm and awareness of their bodies. Training capoeira builds self-esteem and helps the child to develop a sense of identity as an individual, as a member of a nurturing community and as a member of a global society.

My children’s capoeira classes are focused on learning through enjoyment, I use a variety of games to teach basic capoeira techniques. As capoeira encompasses a variety of skills my classes are not based only on fitness but also include acrobatics, rhythm and music, playing traditional musical instruments and singing traditional cultural songs in Portuguese.

I am a qualified capoeira teacher ( from Group Capoeira Brasil )  also I am recognised by the Australian Sports Commission as a community coach under the AASC program. I have practised capoeira for fifteen years and have had eight years of experience as an instructor. I have run numerous after-school and holiday capoeira programs for children in Sydney; for example, at after-school care centres at Maroubra Junction Public School, Daceyville Public school, Maroubra Bay Public School, South Coogee Public School.
